Culcairn restaurant closes after 47 years as Kenny retires

Kenny and Helen Cheng are closing their Chinese restaurant in the Riverina town of Culcairn after nearly five decades.

Kenny's Chinese restaurant, a fixture on Culcairn's Olympic Highway for 47 years, closes on November 15. Kenny Cheng, 70, and wife Helen are retiring due to age and health issues.

Helen suffers from arthritis and Kenny's back can no longer handle the physical work. Kenny and Helen have become part of the community fabric: locals call him their "Chinese dad".

Over decades they have watched generations grow up. The Chengs held prices down, raising them only $2 in the last five years.

They have four children and two grandchildren in Melbourne. The youngest son is finishing his HSC exams this month and will be the last to fly the nest.

The community has paid tribute to their generosity. The couple often gave meals on credit and helped locals in need.
