Patient set alight in petrol attack at Sydney hospital

Raymond James Dungay, 48, is accused of dousing three patients with petrol and setting one alight at Prince of Wales Hospital.

Raymond James Dungay, 48, is accused of spraying petrol from a drink bottle on three patients at Prince of Wales Hospital on Tuesday night around 10:45pm. Two patients, a 63-year-old man and 64-year-old woman, were spared injury when his lighter failed.

Randovan Banic, 53, suffered minor burns and was moved to intensive care. Banic is grateful the attack happened to him rather than a spinal patient unable to protect themselves.

Dungay is under police guard and remains in the hospital. He failed to apply for bail at a bedside hearing Thursday morning.

Health Minister Ryan Park called the incident appalling and pledged to have Dungay removed from the facility. The attack was not disclosed to the public until the next morning, drawing criticism about the delayed notification.

This is the third violent attack at a Sydney hospital this year.
