Government delays ATO credit card ban after small business backlash
The Treasurer delayed the ATO's credit card payment ban after small business complaints.
The ATO moved to refuse credit card payments after a new surcharge ban came into effect, shifting costs onto businesses. Small businesses said they had no time to prepare and pushed back hard.
The Treasurer announced on Friday that the ATO would delay the refusal until the end of the financial year instead. Albanese then claimed at an ACCI dinner that he personally intervened after the chamber's boss texted him.
When asked if the PM had rolled him, Chalmers insisted they were on the same page all along. The Coalition seized on the dispute, mocking what it called a pattern of the PM humiliating his Treasurer.
