Midway timber exporter reviews Bell Bay operations amid cost pressures
Timber exporter Midway Limited is reviewing its Tasmania operations. Low timber prices and rising diesel costs drive the decision.
Midway Limited is a major Australian wood fibre exporter. The company is reviewing its four-hectare processing site in Bell Bay, northern Tasmania.
Chief executive Anthony McKenna cited woodchip prices and rising diesel costs as the main reasons. The company will assess its next steps after loading a vessel in November.
About 15 staff work at the site. The company also contracts with several timber haulage businesses.
Contractors were told last week the company was leaving Tasmania. But McKenna said that would be wrong.
The company has several investments and projects in the state. The Tasmanian Government is working with Midway to explore support options.
These include grants and concessional finance.
