Six AI stocks now drive half of US market gains
Six AI and tech companies have accounted for 57 per cent of US stock market gains since April.
The US stock market's massive gains in 2026 are driven almost entirely by a handful of AI-related companies. Around 230 of the 500 largest stocks have actually fallen in value.
Apple alone has grown by more than $1.4 trillion in just six months. If these six dominant players were removed, the overall market would have grown 4.35 per cent instead of 10 per cent.
Some AI companies remain highly profitable rather than purely hype-driven, unlike the dot-com bubble. A deeper risk lies in circular funding.
Major AI companies are simultaneously customers, suppliers and investors in one another. This makes it harder to judge genuine demand from self-funded marketing.
If one major player fails, the ripple effects could destabilise the entire network.

Why it mattersExtreme market concentration means ordinary investors' portfolios depend heavily on a few companies' success, and a downturn could trigger sudden, widespread losses.
AustraliaAustralian superannuation and investment funds hold significant US equity exposure; a market correction would directly affect Australians' retirement savings.
