Couple completes 15,000km EV road trip across Australia
Tom and Evelyn Hunt drove a Tesla 15,270km across Australia, charging mainly with power points at 47 stops.
Tom and Evelyn Hunt set out to retrace a honeymoon they took more than 40 years earlier in a V8 Holden, this time in a Tesla. Over 15 weeks, they travelled through South Australia and the Northern Territory to Darwin, then home through Queensland.
The couple covered 15,270 kilometres and stayed at 47 campsites, hotels and motels. Most nights they charged overnight using standard power points.
Only four times were they asked to use dedicated fast chargers instead. The couple planned each day's drive to stay within the Tesla's range, usually limiting themselves to about 250 to 300 kilometres.
At Kings Canyon and on a dirt road near Alice Springs, battery levels got tight, but they found powered caravan parks to top up. Mr Hunt says the key is planning: you don't run an electric car empty, just as you wouldn't with petrol.

Why it mattersIt shows Australians can do long-distance travel in electric vehicles without costly detours, using the power points already at most Australian caravan parks and motels.
AustraliaAs Australia's fast-charging network remains sparse in remote areas, the Hunt's trip shows electric vehicles are practical for outback holidays if you plan the range and charge overnight at regular powered sites.
