Conservation group raises $19m to protect 20,000 hectares in far north
Bush Heritage is raising $19 million to buy Wooroora, a 20,000-hectare reserve for 12 endangered species.
A conservation group is raising over $19 million to buy Wooroora in far north Queensland by Christmas. The land spans more than 20,000 hectares of wet forest and savanna woodland, located about 100 kilometres south-west of Cairns and home to cassowaries, tree-kangaroos, koalas and at least 12 threatened species.
The purchase will complete a 429,000-hectare nature corridor stretching toward Cape York. It sits on Jirrbal lands.
Bush Heritage received almost $2.5 million from the Patagonia foundation. An Australian donor gave $6 million.
The group is asking the public to raise the final $5.3 million by December 24. Jirrbal leaders say returning the land to their stewardship will restore cultural practices, language and access to Dreamtime country.
