David Jones collapses after 188 years, 6000 workers face uncertainty
David Jones collapsed into administration after 188 years. This leaves 6000 jobs at risk as luxury brands are leaving.
David Jones, the 188-year-old department store, has collapsed into administration. Administrators McGrathNicol and receivers FTI Consulting were appointed after months of talks with landlord Scentre hit deadlock.
Luxury brands including Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Scanlan Theodore and Oroton left their concession stores. Staff cleared shelves across Sydney and Melbourne.
The collapse puts 6000 workers' jobs at risk and leaves nearly half a million square metres of retail space empty. The business survived the Great Depression and two world wars but could not handle recent retail and economic pressures.
A sale process will look for new owners and rebuild the business.
