Thousands heading to Flemington for Derby Day on Saturday should prepare for a wet and windy day. The Bureau of Meteorology warns showers will develop around dawn and intensify just as crowds arrive.
Severe thunderstorms could bring damaging wind gusts, with forecasters warning of particularly dangerous conditions if a storm passes directly over the racecourse. Between 5mm and up to 15mm of rain is expected.
While temperatures will reach 24 degrees, strong winds will make it feel cooler. The wet weather is expected to ease by late afternoon.
