Wounded Ukrainian soldiers rescued by new evacuation drone
Ukraine's military used a StarGate drone to rescue injured soldiers from battle areas too dangerous for ground rescue.
Ukraine's military now uses a six-rotor StarGate drone with an enclosed rescue capsule. The drone rescues injured soldiers from battle areas too dangerous for ground rescue.
One 24-year-old soldier with a severe foot injury was rescued in less than 15 minutes. The soldier had waited two days to be picked up.
The soldier could not walk 20 kilometres out of the battle area. So the drone was his only way out.
The drone was made by Ukrainian company SkyFall. It can carry 150 kilograms.
It has signal jammers to block Russian electronic warfare. Military commanders plan to build a dedicated air rescue unit with the drones.
This cuts rescue time from hours to minutes.

Why it mattersThis technology changes how armies rescue injured soldiers from active combat. It may save lives when ground rescue is impossible.
AustraliaNo direct Australian effect yet, but if the drone proves successful in Ukraine, Western militaries including Australia's may adopt similar rescue technology for their own operations.
