Can I break my lease in Queensland, and what does it cost?
Usually up to 4 weeks' rent for terms up to 3 years, less if let again sooner.
Your clock
- 14 days: Term end or month to month
- Form 20 with evidence. It ends 7 days after you give it, or the day you hand over, if later: Family violence
The rule in Queensland
- The set amount is 4 weeks' rent before 25% of the term, then 3, 2 and 1.
- Leases before 30 September 2024 use reasonable reletting costs and lost rent.
- Free exits: unfit premises in your first 7 days, a sale in your first 2 months.
The landlord must try to reduce their loss.
