NSW coast towns prepare for unprecedented building boom
NSW targets almost 30,000 new homes across Newcastle, Wollongong and the Central Coast by 2029.
Sydney's construction boom is spreading up the coast. Newcastle, Wollongong and the Central Coast are seeing new tall apartment buildings at record levels.
The NSW government aims for 11,100 homes in Newcastle, 9,400 on the Central Coast and 9,200 in Wollongong by 2029. A Herald review of projects moving through planning suggests the final number could be much larger.
More than 16,000 apartments are already proposed. In Wollongong in early 2026, 139 cranes were working, up from 83 a year earlier.
Newcastle had 125 cranes and the Central Coast had 44. The boom is driven by people moving from Sydney, cheaper land, and government planning changes.
