Dengue vaccine now approved for Australian travellers
Australia approved Qdenga vaccine for some travellers, especially those who previously had dengue.
Dengue is spiking across tropical tourist destinations. Global cases rose from 505,430 in 2000 to at least 14.6 million in 2024.
The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation now recommends Qdenga for some travellers. Qdenga is recommended for people who have had dengue before.
The vaccine needs two doses three months apart. It gives about 80 per cent protection within a year.
Most dengue cases are mild. But severe second infections can cause internal bleeding and death.
Supply increases following the approval are expected to lower the $500-per-dose price. This will make it more accessible for Australian travellers.
