Sydney FC faces former coach Talay in season-opening derby

Ufuk Talay quit Sydney FC in March to join rivals Western Sydney; some players aim to prove something to him.

Talay's return to Allianz Stadium on Friday night will test both the mood in the stands and the resolve of Sydney's squad. The 49-year-old quit the Sky Blues after fan discontent over his playing style and results.

When Sydney declined to activate a contract clause for next season, Talay moved across town to Western Sydney on a two-year deal. Defender Jordan Courtney-Perkins said some players want to prove something to their former coach.

He said this was especially true for those who felt they didn't get enough game time. Talay acknowledged the potential booing at his own press conference, saying it's part of the game.

Sydney made the grand final under new coach Patrick Kisnorbo last season after missing finals the year before, giving the group real belief heading into the campaign.
