Bright Rod Run cancelled after 34 years over council disputes
The Bright Rod Run, which has generated $4.93 million annually for the Alpine Shire, will not return in 2027.
The annual Bright Rod Run will not proceed next year after 34 years, the Bright Rod & Kustom Club announced. Organisers said they faced overwhelming pressure from changing council requirements, withdrawn funding, and loss of access to Pioneer Park oval.
The club said its volunteer members were exhausted by navigating shifting demands and rising costs. According to the Alpine Shire, the event is its largest annual event, bringing more money than three other major festivals combined.
Small businesses in Bright depend heavily on the weekend: one cafe owner said it generates more than $30,000 for her. The Alpine Shire Council said it had not cancelled the event and would work with any future organiser willing to run it.
