Bella Coola tragedy: mother and daughter killed by bear

A grizzly bear killed Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah, 20, near Bella Coola.

Jennifer and Selah disappeared during a walk on Saturday near their home in Bella Coola, British Columbia. The family became worried when they failed to call relatives that night for an online catch-up.

Police found Jennifer's car at the trailhead and started a search with conservation officers and rescue crews. Jennifer's remains were discovered on Monday on the Snooka West Trail with evidence a bear was involved.

Selah was found dead the next day. The community was still recovering from another grizzly attack in November 2025 that hurt 11 people nearby.

Why it mattersGrizzly attacks remain rare but deadly. They raise questions about wildlife safety in remote communities.

AustraliaNo direct Australian effect yet, but the incident highlights wildlife risks Australians face when travelling or living in remote Canadian regions.
