Launceston man jailed two years for strangling former partner

Murfet, 38, was sentenced to two years (one suspended) for assault and strangulation of his former partner.

Michael Raymond Murfet, 38, was sentenced in the Supreme Court in Launceston on November 4 to two years in jail for assault and strangulation. Justice Robert Pearce found Murfet committed the crimes on February 22, 2023, and November 8, 2024.

On the later date, Murfet arrived at his former partner's home despite being told not to come, removed their baby from a high chair, and pushed the child into the woman's arms. Murfet then pushed his former partner, grabbed her around the neck and squeezed until she could not breathe and began losing consciousness.

The baby was not injured. Murfet was on bail when he committed the crime.

Justice Pearce sentenced him to two years from September 13, 2026, with one year suspended for two years on condition he commits no further imprisonable offence. The judge noted Murfet's prior conviction for violence during a football game.

Why it mattersCourt sentences for family violence offences establish the serious legal consequences of assault and send a message about the protection of victims.

AustraliaThis sentence reflects Tasmania's approach to family violence crimes and the seriousness courts attach to assault in domestic settings.
