Auckland airport hotel designs with Maori art and views to match
Auckland's new Pullman hotel uses Maori cultural design. It features korowai cloak patterns and shells gathered by local tribe members.
The new Te Arikinui Pullman hotel sits just 134 seconds' walk from Auckland Airport's international terminal. Te Arikinui Pullman's name means supreme paramount chief in te reo Maori.
The building's design reflects that importance. Black tiles on the outside represent feathers of a traditional korowai cloak.
1,500 gold triangular panels echo the cloak's lining. The lobby floor has terrazzo tiles with seashells gathered by local Tainui waka members.
This looks like a beach shore. The building's floor plan has three important wings.
They point toward places the tribe holds dear: Whangaparaoa where they first landed, Waitemata Harbour where they came from, and Manukau Harbour where they went. Rooms feature soundproof windows and custom carpets that show ocean images.
Modern touches include Nespresso machines. Breakfast costs extra and offers standard food.
The top-floor Te Kaahu restaurant serves good barista coffee with airport views.
