Malaysia Airlines steps into Jetstar Asia's gap with budget Asian routes
Malaysia Airlines now offers budget Asian flights with expanded Qantas rewards, filling the gap left by Jetstar Asia's closure.
Jetstar Asia is gone, but Malaysia Airlines has moved in as an alternative for Australians chasing cheap flights around Asia. The airline recently expanded its partnership with Qantas, adding reciprocal codesharing and boosting rewards points on many fares.
Economy seats on their Boeing 737s run 17.5 inches wide with 30 inches of legroom, tight but workable. All fares include at least 20 kilograms of checked baggage.
The cheapest tickets provide no rewards, but all others earn at least 500 Qantas points plus 20 status credits. Qantas Silver and above get priority check-in; Gold and higher also get lounge access and priority boarding.
Return fares from Sydney to Hong Kong via Kuala Lumpur start around $900.
