Bendigo gets $12m in flood defences to shield 500 homes
Government funding over $12 million for levee projects across Bendigo, Castlemaine, and a hospital to reduce flood risk.
The federal Disaster Ready Fund is backing three separate levee projects in central Victoria. The three projects aim to protect homes and businesses from repeat flooding.
Bendigo's Racecourse Creek Flood Levee in Epsom will get more than $6 million. The project's total cost is $12.3 million.
It will protect more than 500 homes and 60 businesses. A $4.4 million project at Castlemaine and Campbells Creek will shield the township's caravan park, local roads, and key services.
The Rochester and Elmore District Health Service hospital will also get government support for a $3.7 million levee. A 2022 flood forced evacuation of the hospital.
The levees aim to manage water flow toward the Murray. They do this without flooding local homes and businesses.
