Wallabies coach backs Mark Nawaqanitawase for World Cup despite agent's hedging

Wallabies coach Les Kiss is confident Mark Nawaqanitawase will play for Australia next year despite his agent keeping options open.

Les Kiss says he is confident Mark Nawaqanitawase will line up for the Wallabies at next year's Rugby World Cup. On Tuesday, Nawaqanitawase's agent Milan Volavola-Shankar made things unclear by saying the star is keeping his options open.

Nawaqanitawase finishes his three-year stand-down in August next year. Nawaqanitawase will then be able to play for Italy or Fiji through his heritage.

Nawaqanitawase is currently in Japan on a two-year deal with Saitama Wild Knights. Kiss said Nawaqanitawase wants to return to rugby and they are in talks.

Kiss would not promise him a spot. He said every player must earn their place.

Why it mattersNawaqanitawase could be a game-changer for Australia's World Cup campaign next year. His choice signals whether the Wallabies can keep one of their brightest talents.

AustraliaIf Nawaqanitawase plays for the Wallabies at the 2027 World Cup in Australia, he could be the face of the tournament. If he chooses Fiji or Italy, Australia loses a star winger.
