A 3.0-magnitude earthquake aftershock struck near Korrumburra in south-east Victoria on Saturday afternoon, centred at Kardella South about 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 5 kilometres just after 2pm and was recorded by Geoscience Australia.
More than 200 people reported feeling the tremor, far fewer than the initial quake three weeks earlier. There were no reports of injuries or damage.
Earthquake geologist Dee Ninis from Monash University said aftershocks often arrive hours, days or weeks later. The Gippsland Basin sits in a region of heightened seismic activity, with a magnitude 4.7 quake recorded there in 2009 and a magnitude 4.4 in 2011.
