Real estate agent Ajay Malik attacked by dogs; council escalates case
Real estate agent Ajay Malik was critically injured by two dogs while the council pursues state-level charges for tougher penalties.
Ajay Malik was attacked by two dogs while jogging through Seventh Brigade Park in Chermside on October 16, suffering serious injuries to his face and both arms. Brisbane City Council initially ordered the dogs destroyed but withdrew that decision Wednesday to pursue a dangerous dog declaration under state law.
The escalation allows for maximum penalties of up to $120,890 or two years' imprisonment, compared to a maximum local fine of $51,810. The dogs, a bulldog-American staffordshire cross and a bulldog-boxer cross, belong to 22-year-old Layla Evans, who was living in a tent at the park and said the dogs escaped.
Malik's family has launched a $300,000 fundraising campaign to cover his recovery. The owner has 14 days to respond before the council decides whether to formally declare the dogs dangerous.
