Iran claims it lifted 2000km cap on ballistic missiles as US tightens blockade

Iran's Revolutionary Guard says it has lifted a self-imposed limit on ballistic missile range.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced it has lifted a self-imposed 2000km limit on ballistic missile development. Days earlier, the country's supreme leader warned of strong responses to US or Israeli threats.

General Hossein Mohebbi said the restriction had been lifted. General Mohebbi did not confirm Iran has missiles that exceed this range.

A 2000km range reaches parts of Greece, the Balkans, the entire Arabian peninsula and most of Egypt. The US military is launching Task Force Iron Gate.

The force will stop Iran's weapons movement across land borders and the Caspian Sea. This builds on a months-long naval blockade.

The task force will work with the Treasury, State and Justice Departments. They will limit Iran's military financing and weapons supply.

Why it mattersGrowing military tensions between Iran and the US raise the risk of broader conflict. They also increase weapons spread in the region.

AustraliaNo direct Australian effect yet, but Australia is a close US ally and could face pressure to support additional sanctions or military measures.
