News of his death emerged during a Detroit Lions press conference when head coach Dan Campbell was asked about it. Campbell, who met Ditka before the 1999 NFL Draft when Ditka was coaching the New Orleans Saints, shared a warm memory.
Campbell said the meeting, just him and Ditka in a room thick with cigar smoke, was both the best and most intimidating time of his life. Ditka also had a celebrated playing career as a tight end before becoming a coach.
