Iran threatens response far more severe than past conflicts
Iran's security chief warned of a more devastating response to US-Israeli attacks as shipping incidents spike.
Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said Tehran has prepared a response to any fresh US-Israeli attack that would be far more devastating than conflicts in June and February.
Rezaei said his new operational plan will not follow familiar rules of engagement. The warning came as maritime authorities reported multiple attacks on commercial vessels in the Arabian Peninsula, including strikes on tankers near Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Oil prices surged in response: Brent crude hit $109.86 per barrel (up 3.7%), while U.S. West Texas Intermediate rose 3.5% to $101.41.
President Trump said last week he has no intention of using nuclear weapons against Iran and does not plan to deploy ground troops.

Why it mattersMiddle East military threats risk broader conflict that would disrupt global oil supplies and shipping routes, pushing energy costs higher worldwide.
AustraliaHigher oil prices flow through to Australian petrol, transport, and energy costs; any wider conflict could disrupt shipping routes and trade with Middle Eastern partners.
