Chaz Mostert wins rain-soaked Gold Coast race, books finals spot
Chaz Mostert won the opening Gold Coast 500 race by 23 seconds in wet conditions, qualifying for the next finals round.
Chaz Mostert has kept his championship hopes alive by winning a rain-drenched opening race at the Gold Coast 500 on Saturday. The Walkinshaw TWG driver won by 23.461 seconds in the 85-lap race at Surfers Paradise, his fifth victory on the circuit.
The safety car ran for the opening three laps before Mostert overtook pole-sitter Broc Feeney on lap four, then drove away in the miserable conditions. The win puts him through to the next finals round at Sandown, regardless of his overall standing.
Mostert had started the weekend ranked eighth and risked elimination if he failed to win one of the two races. David Reynolds finished second, snatching the spot after Matt Payne copped a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits.
