Wiener Crew Rescue's Halloweenie fundraiser hunts $10,000 for dachshunds
Dachshund rescue group in the Hunter Valley raised funds at a Halloweenie event to help the rising number of dogs needing homes.
Wiener Crew Rescue, founded in 2024, held its first Halloweenie fundraiser in the Hunter Valley over Halloween. The event featured costumes, a dachshund dash, and market stalls.
The group aimed to raise around $10,000. Director Joan Larkin said rescues have jumped from one or two dogs a week to five or six.
There is now a waiting list. Most dachshunds need rehoming because they are needy.
They like constant company and are often not very social with other dogs. Some arrive with health conditions such as heart defects and disc disease.
The rescue works with foster carers and volunteers. They provide vet care, vaccinations and support before finding homes.
Education was a key part of the day. The group raised awareness about the breed's needs and the risks of backyard breeding.
