Democrat Haley Stevens backs Republican in Michigan's closest Senate race
Haley Stevens is a four-term Democratic congresswoman. She endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's Senate race on Sunday. This was two days before the election.
Stevens lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed. She was left out of a rally at a Detroit church.
She switched sides publicly and went to a different church with Rogers instead. Stevens held a press conference with Rogers.
She said the race was close. She said El-Sayed made clear she was not welcome in his campaign.
Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, called her move a despicable betrayal. The Michigan race is one of the closest Senate races on Tuesday.
It could change who controls the Senate. Their conflict focuses on Israel policy and accusations of antisemitism, which El-Sayed denies.
Several of Stevens's staff reportedly quit after her endorsement.

Why it mattersEndorsements from the other party days before an election can shift close races. This one shows deep problems in the Democratic campaign. The party needs to be united right now.
