Mel C's solo album beats all other Spice Girls' releases

Mel C's album Sweat is the highest-charting solo release of any Spice Girl member.

Melanie C, known as Sporty Spice, has released her highest-charting solo album with Sweat. The 52-year-old singer, songwriter and performer grew up working-class in Whiston, near Liverpool, where money was tight and every dollar counted.

Melanie C described guilt when she became wealthy young with the Spice Girls, earning money her relatives would not make in a lifetime. The turning point came when Lionel Richie gave her advice at an awards show: "Earn here and spend here," gesturing up then down.

In other words, live within your means. The advice stuck with her.

Now, decades later, she feels more comfortable with success and less worried about judgment, a freedom she says comes with age.
