Michael Douglas opens up about Catherine Zeta-Jones marriage separation

Douglas says his separation from Zeta-Jones taught them both to change, something he told Sawyer about their time apart.

Michael Douglas, now 82, says he met Catherine Zeta-Jones after seeing her in the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro. After reading some magazine profile saying she liked older men, he pursued her at a dinner party.

The couple, who are 25 years apart in age, share two children and will celebrate their 26th wedding anniversary in November. In his new memoir One Helluva Ride, Douglas reveals their marriage survived a brief separation he calls a time out.

"We both had to change," Douglas told ABC News of the separation. "Sometimes I think it's just good to call time out and just talk as two human beings."

The memoir also details his affairs, his father Kirk Douglas's influence on his life, and his struggles with substance abuse.
