India releases detained protest leaders; vows to continue rallies
India released detained leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party youth movement after a major crackdown on Saturday's planned protests.
India released leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) youth movement a day after detaining them to stop mass protests. The protests were planned against the election commissioner.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and two other leaders were held at the airport after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai. A court released them on Sunday on the condition they avoid breach of peace for one year.
Authorities launched a major security operation Saturday, detaining thousands before they could gather at Delhi's Jantar Mantar protest site. The movement wants the election commission head to resign over alleged misconduct in a nationwide voter roll revision.
The CJP and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi have promised to continue protests on Monday despite the crackdown.
