India detains 2000+ as Delhi locks down over election protest

Police detained more than 2,000 protesters during a major security lockdown in the capital. They also arrested the Cockroach movement founder.

India's government locked down parts of Delhi on Saturday to stop a planned mass protest. Police detained more than 2,000 demonstrators.

Internet services were cut off in the city centre. Dozens of metro stations closed.

The Cockroach movement is a youth group. It had organized the rally to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar step down.

The movement says he wrongly changed the voter rolls. He removed roughly 130 million names.

Security forces arrested the movement's founder, Abhijeet Dipke, at the airport. The UN voiced concern about the arrests and called for respect for peaceful assembly.
