North of North gets darker as Netflix show trades rom-com for complex drama
The Arctic comedy shifts tone in its second half, moving from sitcom hijinks into deeper character territory and family conflict.
North of North's first season was a lighthearted show about a woman building a new life in a fictional Arctic town. Season 2 keeps the early rom-com pace but gradually turns more serious.
The turning point comes when the story explores the fractured history between the main character Siaja and her mother Neevee, including a daughter Neevee lost years ago. Siaja and Neevee have painful pasts they've avoided facing.
Instead of just joking around, the show now asks whether either of them was a perfect mother or daughter, and forces them to defend and ultimately support each other. The show still has funny moments and the same colourful Arctic setting, but it now balances entertainment with real emotional weight.
The relationship between Siaja and Neevee becomes the heart of the story, and the season ends with major changes ahead for Neevee.
