Minns government opens $12b tender for Hunter train factory
The government opens applications for a $12 billion train hub in the Hunter creating 780 construction jobs and 550 ongoing roles.
NSW Premier Chris Minns announced Friday that applications are open for building the next generation of NSW trains. The location will be either Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot or the former Glencore coal mine at Teralba.
The final location will be decided before the end of the year. If Labor wins the next state election, Minns wants the tender signed quickly.
Manufacturing should start within the next parliamentary term. He wants production running by the early 2030s or earlier.
Manufacturers from around the world can apply. The winning company must use 50 per cent local content.
Minns pointed to the Tangara train refurbishment program as an example. It showed the state can deliver on time and within budget.
Lake Macquarie City Council strongly supports the Teralba site. The location would help workers move from coal jobs into manufacturing roles.
