Canberra board game store owner moved by community after break-in
A 19-year-old broke into Jolt Games on Sunday, but the owner says the outpouring of community support left him humbled.
Jolt Games in Mitchell was broken into early Sunday when a man smashed the front door and just tried to steal several puzzles and games while overturning displays. Owner Luis Lopez was alerted by a phone notification and called police while the thief was still inside.
A 19-year-old was arrested nearby and charged with burglary. Despite the vandalism forcing the shop to close Sunday, Lopez said he was blown away by locals who offered to help clean up, restock and fix the window.
Many regulars and customers reached out via social media offering support. Lopez said the moment proved why he and his family opened the shop.
He reopened Monday afternoon and said the response showed the strength of Canberra's gaming community. He runs the shop late into the night most weekends as a personal sacrifice.
Police confirmed the break-in happened around 12:20 am on 18 October.
