Victoria ranked worst state to run a business for third straight year
Victoria ranks last for doing business for three straight years, the Business Council of Australia says.
High taxes, slow regulation and relatively high unemployment are driving the result. That's according to the council's Regulation Rumble report released this week.
South Australia topped the list for the fourth year running. South Australia has the most competitive payroll and licensing rules.
Victoria fell from fourth to last on planning. This is because changes to the state's planning laws won't take effect until 2027.
Other states are already moving ahead. Bran Black, the council's chief, called it a wake-up call for a state that was historically an economic powerhouse.
One bright spot: Victoria's phasing out of business insurance duties by 2033. This pushed it to second-best on that measure.
