Operation Furlong nets 60+ offences as speeding surges on Ballarat roads

Victoria's Operation Furlong detected over 9000 road offences statewide; speeding made up 44 per cent, with Ballarat recording more than 60 breaches.

Ballarat police pulled over a concreter doing 125kmh in an 80kmh zone on a wet Saturday morning, finding his truck's tools unsecured. The driver copped almost $3000 in fines and a six-month licence ban.

Five drink-drivers were caught locally, including a woman who blew 0.10, twice the legal limit, at 7.40am. The woman's licence was suspended for 10 months and her car impounded for 30 days at $1400.

Senior Sergeant Neville Leishman said speeding 5kmh over the limit doubles crash risk, especially in wet weather. The long weekend was one of Victoria's deadliest in recent years, with 10 people killed on roads statewide.
