Stadium parking debate misses what MCG already taught us

MCG holds 100,000 people with just 2000 car parks; Adelaide Oval proved minimal parking works.

Canberra's new Lakeside Stadium has triggered parking concerns, but major venues show it is not the barrier people fear. The MCG in Melbourne has about 2000 car parks for a 100,000 capacity.

Docklands manages 56,000 fans with 2500 parks. Adelaide Oval moved to the city with minimal parking and reinvigorated crowds.

Even locally, more than 120,000 people attend Lake Burley Griffin's Skyfire fireworks each March without vast parking. A new tram line will run straight past the stadium site.

The ACT government points out that more than 10,000 car parks already exist in nearby Civic. Public transport and walking became the norm once venues moved to accessible city locations.

Why it mattersPlanning delays or rejected proposals often stem from parking myths; this evidence can unblock the project and get the stadium built sooner.

AustraliaA city-centre stadium for Canberra would boost the capital's events calendar and reduce car dependency, following Melbourne and Adelaide's success.
