Melton council explores partnership to build two train stations

Melton City Council is exploring a partnership with Victoria's government. It would build two new train stations: Thornhill Park and Mt Atkinson.

Melton City Council has voted to start talks with Victoria's government about building two train stations in Melbourne's outer west. The area is growing very fast.

The two stations are Thornhill Park and Mt Atkinson on the Ballarat V/Line. Local residents have asked for them for years.

Melton is growing at 6.61 per cent every year. That is more than three times faster than Melbourne's average.

Mt Atkinson suburb alone will reach 32,000 people by 2051. Nearby stations at Caroline Springs, Rockbank and Cobblebank are already crowded.

Car parks are full by 7:30am. Building the new stations and upgrading the Melton line would reduce cars on roads.

The council says it would mean 12,000 fewer cars daily by 2041. It would also bring 15,000 more commuters.

Talks with the state government are now underway.

AustraliaOuter Melbourne commuters facing years-long delays could see relief, but funding and timeline remain uncertain ahead of the Victorian state election.
