Katy Gallagher backs Canberra lakeside stadium plan
A consortium backs a plan for a $500 million multipurpose stadium on Lake Burley Griffin church land.
A consortium led by Canberra Airport owners is proposing a new stadium on One Regatta Place, the former archbishop's residence next to Lake Burley Griffin. Federal Finance Minister Katy Gallagher said the location is "an opportunity too good to miss" if the site becomes available.
The stadium could seat about 25,000 for sports and 35,000 for concerts, designed to replace the aging Canberra Stadium in Bruce. The consortium plans design and planning studies within six months, then ask the federal government to decide within six to 12 months whether to proceed.
If approved, construction would take about two years, targeting a 2030 opening. The National Capital Authority holds jurisdiction over the site, not the ACT government.
