Light rail stage 2B ditches bridge-widening plan over community concerns
The bridge widening for light rail stage 2B was dropped due to community concerns about traffic and safety.
The government dropped plans to widen Melrose Drive Bridge over Yarralumla Creek by about 7.5 metres. Widening would have forced major traffic closures and detours on nearby streets.
Traffic modelling showed a different design could achieve the same results without the disruption. Speed limits on Capital Circle will be reduced to improve safety where it meets Adelaide Avenue.
More kiss-and-ride spaces will be added at Hopetoun Circuit, Kent Street and Carruthers Street. The light rail track on State Circle will shift from the median to the inner side between Sydney Avenue and Adelaide Avenue.
