Hawker Tennis Centre deadline missed yet again as development stalls
The Hawker Tennis Centre leaseholder missed a deadline to submit development plans. The authority granted another extension.
The Hawker Tennis Centre in Canberra is abandoned and unchanged. The leaseholder failed to submit new development plans by the end of September.
The ACT Government gave the developer more time to file an application. Another delay extends a long story that started in 2018.
That year, a childcare centre development was proposed but never built. A second deadline was September 2024, then rejected when requested in February 2026.
A third deadline at the end of September 2026 has now passed. Ginninderra MLA Peter Cain questioned how many chances one developer should receive.
He asked when enforcement would become real. Planning Minister Chris Steel said the government is reviewing its powers.
The Territory Planning Authority needs stronger enforcement. This covers unused commercial and recreational sites.

Why it mattersEight years and multiple missed deadlines show the regulator lacks real enforcement power. Developers can hold valuable public land indefinitely while residents wait for promised facilities that never come.
