Man charged in Melbourne tram stabbing was on bail
A 37-year-old man charged with stabbing a woman in the neck was on bail when the attack occurred.
A man has been charged after a woman was stabbed in the neck on a Melbourne tram yesterday. The alleged attack happened on the route 1 tram to South Melbourne at about midday.
The 37-year-old man lunged at the 51-year-old woman with a steak knife while the tram was moving. Passengers screamed and alerted the driver, who stopped the tram on Eastern Road.
Other passengers restrained the man until police arrived and arrested him at gunpoint. The woman was taken to hospital with a serious but not life-threatening wound.
The man, who was on bail at the time, has schizophrenia and remains in custody.
