Airport owners pursue lakefront site for Canberra stadium

Airport owners seek Archbishop's House land for a lakefront stadium. It would hold 25,000 sports fans and 35,000 concert-goers.

The Snow family own the airport. The Snow family are in talks with the Catholic Archdiocese to buy the five-acre One Regatta Place site next to Lake Burley Griffin.

The stadium would hold the Raiders, Brumbies and Matildas, with views across the lake. Canberra Airport chief executive Stephen Byron announces the proposal today.

The venue would sit next to a new light rail stop. It would be within walking distance of Civic's restaurants and bars.

Inspired by Christchurch's Te Kaha stadium, the group aims to revive the city's heart. The site requires National Capital Authority approval because it is national land.
