Electric cars outsell petrol for second month running
Electric cars outsold petrol for the second month running, capturing 24.1 per cent of September sales.
Australians bought more than 26,200 battery-electric vehicles in September, more than any other single powertrain type. Petrol car sales plummeted more than 36 per cent compared to the same month last year.
Hybrid and plug-in hybrid sales also surged, up 20 and 100 per cent respectively. Motorists are buying one EV every 100 seconds since fuel prices started climbing in March.
The Ford Ranger topped the overall sales chart, followed by the Toyota RAV4 hybrid and Tesla's Model Y. Electric car buyers can cut fuel costs by up to $3,000 a year, industry data shows.
