Canberra's stadium bid looks to Christchurch model
Canberra Airport has proposed building a stadium at Regatta Place, modelled on Christchurch's Te Kaha stadium.
Canberra Airport has unveiled a proposal to build a stadium in the city centre at the Archbishop's House site in Civic on Commonwealth land. The proposed venue would host major sporting events and international music acts.
The airport said the site was chosen to keep crowds within walking distance of the light rail, hotels and restaurants. The concept takes inspiration from Christchurch's Te Kaha stadium, which opened in 2026 and can seat up to 36,000.
The airport said it would contribute to the design and costings but would not seek ownership. The proposal would need Commonwealth approval to transfer the lease from the Catholic Church.
This follows years of discussion about a Civic stadium, including as a 2022 election issue.
