Paterson accuses Greens of letting Putin veto Australian aid to Ukraine

Opposition defence spokesman James Paterson says the Greens would give Russia a veto over Australian military support for Ukraine.

New Greens leader David Shoebridge says his party will not back military weapons for Ukraine. The UN Security Council must approve first.

Russia, as a permanent council member, can veto any such resolution. Opposition defence spokesman James Paterson says this means Vladimir Putin could decide Australia's foreign policy.

Paterson said the Greens would abandon Ukraine and give Russia a veto over Australia's national interest. Shoebridge counters that the Greens firmly support humanitarian aid, sanctions and non-military help.

Russia has killed more than 15,000 civilians since its 2022 invasion. Australia has given Ukraine almost $1.9 billion in direct aid, trained troops and supplied battle tanks.

Australia also signed a security agreement with President Zelenskyy.
