NASA's X-70 Fractal takes flight within two years

NASA unveiled the crewed X-70 Fractal. It will test advanced flight controls and carry experimental payloads in new ways.

NASA announced the X-70 Fractal, a new crewed experimental aircraft. It tests advanced flight controls and rapid changes in real flight.

The aircraft weighs 10,000 pounds at takeoff and carries up to 2,000 pounds of experimental payloads. The X-70 will cruise at Mach 0.75.

It reaches altitudes of up to 45,000 feet and flies over 1,500 nautical miles. NASA expects the first flight within two years.

The modular design lets researchers swap payloads quickly between experiments. This continues NASA's tradition of X-planes that pushed aviation forward since the Bell X-1 broke the sound barrier in 1947.

Why it mattersNew experimental platforms speed up testing of aviation technologies. These technologies eventually reach commercial and military aircraft.

AustraliaNo direct Australian effect yet, but advancements in experimental aircraft often flow into global aviation standards and commercial aviation technology.
