ACT launches new inquiry into Canberra's high fuel prices
The ACT Legislative Assembly is investigating a problem. Canberra motorists consistently pay more for petrol than drivers in surrounding areas.
Canberra's fuel prices have come under scrutiny again. The ACT Legislative Assembly's Standing Committee on Economics, Industry and Recreation has started an inquiry.
The committee will look at why drivers here pay more than those across the border. The committee will check retail margins and terminal-gate prices.
It will see if reforms from a 2019 investigation actually worked. On September 16, Canberra had the highest average petrol price among Australia's eight capital cities.
Prices jumped 17.3 cents in just one week. Earlier investigations found the fuel market is concentrated.
There are fewer discount retailers. This is a key problem.
